Partial Power Outage at Home: Why Some Rooms Have No Electricity
A partial power outage is different from an entire neighborhood losing electricity. You may find that one bedroom has no outlets, several kitchen circuits are off, or some lights work while others do not. The location and pattern of the outage can help identify the next safe step.
Could the problem be a branch circuit?
A tripped protective device or a fault on one circuit can interrupt power to a group of outlets or lights. If the outage is limited to one area, note which devices no longer work and whether a breaker or GFCI appears to be involved. Do not open the electrical panel cover or investigate wiring yourself.
Could the utility supply be involved?
A problem on the utility side can sometimes cause unusual or uneven power conditions. If neighbors also have problems, or if the outage coincides with a known electrical utility event, check the utility's official outage information. Problems involving service conductors or a service connection must be handled by qualified personnel.
Warning signs of abnormal voltage
If some lights become unusually bright while others dim, appliances behave erratically, or you notice burning smells or electrical arcing, treat the condition as potentially serious. Stop using affected equipment and seek prompt qualified help. Do not attempt to repair service equipment.
What information is useful to collect?
Describe which rooms are affected, when the power changed and whether the issue followed a storm, renovation or appliance problem. The electrician may also ask whether the utility has reported an outage in the area.
What if the problem comes and goes?
An intermittent problem can still indicate a loose or failing connection. It is helpful to describe the timing, but do not keep operating suspect equipment simply to reproduce the symptom.
