Bathroom Lighting Installation: Vanity Lights and Safety
Bathroom lighting should make the mirror easy to use while keeping the room comfortable. A single overhead light can cast shadows, and decorative fixtures do not automatically suit every location near a shower or bathtub.
Light the mirror as well as the room
Vanity fixtures or wall sconces near a mirror can illuminate faces more evenly than a single ceiling light. Consider mirror width, mounting position, light color and how the fixture looks with the rest of the room.
Ceiling fixtures and LED lighting
Ceiling-mounted lights and recessed LEDs can provide general illumination. Select light output and color to complement the vanity lighting. Dimming may be possible when the LED fixture and controls are compatible.
Special electrical requirements near water
Bathrooms are damp environments, and lighting near bathtubs or showers can require particular fixture ratings, clearance and installation conditions. Never assume a decorative chandelier can safely be installed above a tub. Have a qualified electrical contractor assess the location first.
Replacing an existing vanity fixture
The existing box, wiring condition, fixture dimensions and mounting requirements influence whether a direct replacement is possible. Larger or smaller fixtures can also expose wall areas that need finishing.
